Self Portrait by Miyuka Schipfer.

With an obsessive need to keep traces of the daily show of life, she has been documenting her surroundings for more than ten years in both intimate settings, and those where she sits as a distant observer. By observing her subjects with attention and discretion, she is focused on a 'suspended' time, specific to observational drawing.

Schipfer strives to make the time of the encounter with her subject ritualised by the drawing, to become more sensitive to slight variations in front of a falsely stopped scene, a bowl of fruit or a sleeping face.

In her work, she tries to bring together a condensed version of this extended time in a single static image.

Her aim is not to show the subject, but rather the encounter of a glance with the subject, and to invite the spectator to feel and share this encounter themselves.

Because "the most intimate is also the most universal" (Le traité des solitudes, Nicolas Grimaldi, Ed. Puf 2003), her subjects are always drawn from her lived experiences.

Part of Schipfer’s work presented by ICHANT was realised in Tetouan, Morocco. The etchings drawn in situ are faithful to her impressions of the subject. As for the aquatint and the colouring added in the workshop, they bear witness to the memory of these impressions, with a freedom in the interpretation and representation of all sensations, including olfactory and sound. These last two stages in the workshop are like remnants of samples of her memories always in movement.
